Independent journalism is essential democratic infrastructure, yet in many countries its survival is being challenged on multiple fronts at once. Journalists face physical threats and security risks, particularly in war zones such as Ukraine and in increasingly restrictive political environments where investigative reporting can trigger intimidation, surveillance, strategic lawsuits, or violence. At the same time, media organisations face growing financial pressures as advertising markets shrink, donor support becomes politicised, and public-interest journalism becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.

 

This panel explores how independent media can continue to serve the public interest amid war, political pressure, economic uncertainty, and legal repression. Speakers will share practical approaches to journalist safety, financial sustainability, legal defence, and cross-border solidarity, drawing on experiences from across the region.

 

The discussion will consider what it takes to protect journalism not simply as a collection of individual outlets, but as a vital part of a broader democratic ecosystem that safeguards citizens’ right to know.
