Workshop: Cold War Games: Teaching Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Through History
Understanding the history of propaganda and information warfare is essential to recognising how manipulation techniques evolve, adapt, and persist over time. This workshop will demonstrate how historical cases can be transformed into engaging Media and Information Literacy (MIL) activities for both formal and non-formal education. Participants will explore how historical knowledge can serve as a practical tool for strengthening critical thinking, media literacy, and resilience to manipulation.
The workshop introduces Cold War Games, an educational board game developed by the Media Development Foundation (MDF) and the Soviet Past Research Laboratory (SovLab) to explore historical propaganda, disinformation, and influence operations through an interactive learning experience.
Using game-based learning, participants will engage with examples of Soviet-era propaganda and active measures targeting NATO, while developing practical skills to identify recurring propaganda techniques in today’s information environment.
